Q&A with Anthony...
7 May 2008

Q: Ant, what was your initial reaction when you heard the news about the team?

Anthony Davidson: It wasn't a complete shock as we have all known how difficult things have been, but I'm obviously really disappointed that the team is unable to see out the rest of the season and beyond, and gutted not just for myself but for all the guys at the factory who have worked so hard.

Q: Have you spoken to the team since the news broke?

AD: Yes, I spoke to my engineer and a few people at the team this morning, and I have been at the factory in Leafield today.

Q: Looking over your time at the team, what have been the best moments, and the worst, other than our recent news?

AD: There have been a lot of good moments - being on the grid in Melbourne for the first time last year having waited so long for a race drive, and some very strong qualifying performances would be among my favourites. The worst moment was hearing that the team was withdrawing, and of course the infamous ground hog which cost me a top five result...

Q: What do you think made SAF1 TEAM so special?

AD: It was a small team, but with a lot of passion. The team has always worked incredibly hard, and I think this year the guys showed great dedication and loyalty to keep fighting especially given the uncertainty over the future.

Q: What is in store for you now?

AD: After several years as a test driver in F1 I’m glad that I had the chance to show that I can race and to prove my speed, and I’m grateful to the team and Honda for the opportunity. Although it's a difficult time of the year to find an alternative option as most plans are finalised and the season is well underway, I’m glad I took the opportunity to compete again this year and strongly believe that I have unfinished business in Formula One.

Q: And finally Ant, SAF1 Team fans in their thousands have sent messages of good will and support to the team in Leafield. Do you have a message for the SAF1 Team fans around the world?

AD: The SAF1 TEAM fans have always been brilliant and I would like to thank them for their incredible support. The many messages that we have received have been very much appreciated.

Super Aguri F1 Team experienced mixed fortunes at the 2008 Spanish Grand Prix today. Takuma Sato took the chequered flag in 13th position, the team's highest placing of the season to date, whilst Anthony Davidson was forced to retire his SA08A in the opening stages of the race due to an overheating issue resulting from a pierced water radiator.

Anthony Davidson: "It was a disappointing end to the weekend for me. After Piquet ran wide at the beginning of the race he dragged a lot of gravel on to the track and a stone from that then damaged my water radiator, putting me out of the race. I got a good start and felt comfortable in the car up to that point, so it is a shame to have retired so early, but I'd like to thank everyone in the team for their hard work and determination this weekend."

Aguri Suzuki, Team Principal: "It was a tough race with only just over half of the competitors crossing the finish line. Despite the fact that we did not attend the test here last week, both drivers and all the mechanics and engineers have done a great job today. I am sorry for Anthony as he retired due to damage to his radiator, but he did a great job at the start. Taku had a very good race in a difficult situation and came home in 13th position, which is our best result so far this season. It has been a difficult weekend for everybody in our team and I would like to thank our partners and the fans for their continued support."

Super Aguri F1 Team driver Anthony Davidson did exactly what the team had planned for this weekend and brought home his SA08A’s home to take the chequered flag at the 2008 Grand Prix of Bahrain in 16th positions.

Anthony Davidson: "“It was an enjoyable race today. To come home with another two-car finish is great for the team. I had a bit of traffic for the first two stints of the race, but then once that cleared I was able to get into a good rhythm. It was another strong race for me and I would like to thank the team for all their hard work this weekend.”

Aguri Suzuki, Team Principal: “It was good for the team to have another two-car finish, but it is frustrating that we did not have more pace as the drivers did an excellent job. We have collected a good amount of data but shall have to work on improving our performance for the next grand prix in Barcelona.”

Super Aguri F1 Team driver, Anthony, endured extremely hot and humid weather conditions to bring the car home at the end of the 2008 Malaysian Grand Prix in 15th position.

Anthony: “It was a good race for the team, and me, today. It was great to do my first full distance race since Brazil and I think it went well. The boys did an excellent job and the car ran reliably all the way through the race. There were no problems what so ever and the tyres worked well. I felt comfortable in the car and I could push whenever I wanted to improve the lap time. I just stayed out of trouble and brought the car home in a very respectable position for the situation that we are in at the moment.”

Aguri Suzuki, Team Principal: “I am very happy to have a two-car finish here in Malaysia because it is a very hot, humid and difficult race. The whole team has done an excellent job and for both cars to finish means that we have finally started the 2008 season."

The Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne today was not without incident for everyone out on the track. Super Aguri F1 Team driver Anthony endured dry and extremely hot weather conditions during what turned out to be an eventful inaugural race of the 2008 season.

Anthony made a clean get-away, however at turn three on lap one he became sandwiched between two cars which came to an arrowhead in front of him. His race immediately came to an end when he had to retire to the pits.

Anthony Davidson: “It is disappointing to have an early retirement from the Australian Grand Prix. I am really frustrated that I couldn’t do the laps that I wanted to today and finish the race, as that was my main aim. We haven’t had much time in the car this weekend or in testing and it was really important to get that done today, so it is gutting not to have done that. I feel that through no fault of my own I was sandwiched between two cars, trying to avoid the inevitable. I tried to brake to get away from it and the cars right and left just rode over my front wheels, so there was no where for me to go.”

Aguri Suzuki, Team Principal
“I would like to thank all my staff and drivers as I know that it was a very difficult winter period for the team. We are now here in Australia and although we have not completed enough pre-season testing, I think that everyone has done an excellent job this week, even though we had limited running in Friday’s practice, Qualifying and in the race. Anthony was very unlucky after the start. We did not finish both cars, but we are here, we have started the 2008 season and our fighting spirit has not diminished.”
