PRESS RELEASE:
Gornall inside Lap Record on his
first visit to Croft Race Circuit
6 May 2003
James Gornall, the 18-year old race ace from Werrington, Peterborough, recorded lap times significantly faster than the lap record at the Croft race circuit in North Yorkshire, on his very first visit to the track, and on only the 3rd time out in his BARC Formula Renault single seater.
The 2001 Formula TKM British National Karting Champion has taken his first step into single seater racing with JA Motorsport from Norwich, past winners of the BARC Formula Renault Championship. Gornall’s new team were delighted with his performance over the 2-day pre-season test session.
“Clearly this was a big test for James so early on in his car racing career,” said Team Manager James Beales, “as both car and circuits are so new to him. However, he learnt the circuit very quickly indeed, gave us the feedback we needed to set up the car, listened to what we had to say to improve the times, and simply went out and did it! Very impressive, and a credit to James’ talent and commitment.”
The teenage ace himself said, “I was determined to get the most out of the test, as I need all the seat time in the car I can get ready for the start of racing at Silverstone in April. Once I felt I knew my way round the circuit I started to push early on to try and find the limits of the car and what to expect. I am really pleased. The car felt good, and we were able to make changes to improve the speed and set up. A little faster than the Karts I am used to but in many ways similar! I am sure my karting experience helps.”
James is due to contest this years 2003 BARC Formula Renault Championship, after having raced in Formula ICA Karts in 2002, both in the Elf/Hill House Hammond Super 1 Championship in the UK, and also in the European Championships.
