James has just returned from only his second ever single seater car race at the demanding Pembrey circuit in south Wales this last weekend and is now leading the BARC Formula Renault British Championship. And he did it in style. In timed qualifying he broke the lap record by 3 tenths of a second to take pole position. In the 20 car race, he led from lights to flag to take the win, and on the way set yet another fastest lap of the race. ( In his first ever car race at Silverstone 3 weeks earlier he also had the fastest lap of the race and set a new lap record!) A truly remarkable performance from a remarkable young talent.
James’ comment immediately after the race to the appreciative gathered crowds, “ I really enjoyed that. These things are fantastic. I had some close wheel to wheel racing at the start of the race and had a moment or two. Once I was able to settle down I simply pushed hard to create a gap and give myself some space to take away the pressure. I then concentrated on not making any mistakes. I had about a 2 second lead over the 2nd car, my team mate in fact, but this went down to a second at the end when I had to pass a few backmarkers. I’m really pleased. Not bad for a rookie!!”
From being a novice rookie, James has overnight turned into being one of the Championship favourites and has turned a few heads in the motor racing world. Not least the teams running the other vastly more experienced drivers.
“I think he’s got them worried!” commented James Beales the Team Manager for JAMotorsport who are delighted they have James on board this year. “He is living up to, and beyond all our expectations.”
And on his return on Monday, James has just taken and passed his ARDS exams and assessment to become a fully qualified race driver instructor at The Johnny Herbert Race School, Rockingham Motorspeedway. One of their youngest!
James will next race at Croft in Yorkshire, on 24/25 May. Visit his website at www.jamesgornall.com to keep
up to date. James is now looking for sponsorship into 2004. He is clearly deserving of support.
