JIG Racing: 2003 BARC Formula Renault Champion & 2001 British Champion

Charity winner against F1 teams
17th/18th July 2004
Report: Mike Hayden

James joined forces at the weekend with British Touring Car Seat driver Rob Huff, Federico Montoya (younger brother to F1 driver Juan-Pablo Montoya), and Dominic Jackson, to take part in a 12-hour charity endurance kart race at the Daytona Raceway near Milton Keynes. James’ took on 32 other teams, which included drivers from McLaren, Williams, BAR, Jaguar and Jordan Formula 1 teams.

12 grueling hours later the Gornall team emerged as the winners, carrying a two-lap advantage after some exciting and disciplined driving from James and his team. The win would have been by a clear five laps advantage, had it not been for brake failure with one hour still left to race! James took over at this point from Federico Montoya, with the brief from team manager Peter Huff: “Go as fast as you can… but bring it home!” And bring it home James did, to take the chequered flag and victory on behalf of all the team, to stirring applause from the crowds looking on.

The annual event hosted by the Deepings Round Table (www.deepingroundtable.co.uk), raised in excess of £12,000.00, which included an auction of F1 memorabilia. James and the team earned the right to donate a third of this amount to the ‘Cavitron Charity’. Cavitron is a neurosurgical charity with whom James Palmer, (brother of former Tyrrell F1 driver Dr Jonathon Palmer) is heavily involved, and who was naturally delighted with the result.

Speaking just after he had taken the chequered flag, James commented: “This has been a superb event and every one involved has done a fantastic job. I have really enjoyed working with the other guys. I guess we will have to come back next year to defend the title!”
