JIG Racing: 2003 BARC Formula Renault Champion & 2001 British Champion

Difficult day
27th August 2007

Following so quickly after the previous weekends Kartmasters GP event, James found his front-disc braked chassis was still evil to the point of being undriveable at Warden Law, for one of the rounds of the British Super One Championship.

Timed qualifying set the ball rolling in the wrong direction when
James set the 14th fastest time, even though he was only 0.48s away from the fastest time of the day. To then finish 10th just over nine seconds away from the winner in the first heat was quite remarkable, with James left wondering just what he could have achieved with a chassis that handled properly. When compared to the fastest race lap of 49.75s, James' best lap of 50.18s was roughly on a par with the
difference in timed qualifying . Heat two also went well with James finishing in 9th place only 6.44s behind the winner, his best lap of 50.51s holding up well against the best race lap of 50.10s.

This left James on grid nine for the first final, but by now he was starting to struggle with the handling of the kart. "I kept looking over my shoulder wondering why it was taking the others so long to overtake me..!" The second final was more of the same as Ian raced to make set-up changes, in the hope that they would overcome the deficiencies within the kart - sadly they failed to do so. James finished in 16th place having lost an average of one second a lap to the winner.

"It was embarrassing," he said after the race. "It felt slow and again I was surprised that some drivers seemed to struggle to get past me. Unless we can get the proper fittings to mount the front brakes on this chassis we are just wasting time and money." And looking over his shoulder provided a wistful remark: "Imagine what I could do if I could get my hands on that kart..." as he looked at the race winner's Tonykart...
