Strong FIA GT Debut
6th May 2009
James and his team-mate Jon Barnes, the reigning British GT Champions, had an up-and-down weekend at Silverstone, which had not been helped by the rough start they had during race 1 on Saturday.
James took the opening stint from the start, only to experience a wayward Ford GT when the driver lost control and spun in front of him.
Unfortunately
for James', who could not avoid the incident, his Aston Martin
incurred light bodywork damage to the front of the car and the oil
cooler was punctured, ending the race.
Repaired for race 2 on Sunday though, and starting on grid 29, the Gornall/Barnes duo made excellent progress, climbing to 16th position during the 31 lap race, finishing the race on the same lap as the winners, but more importantly, finishing as the highest placed Pirelli tyred runners. It was evident that the Michelin tyre ruled the roost at the opening two Silverstone rounds, being as much as two seconds a lap quicker than the Pirelli shod cars, so in the circumstances, apart from the car damage on Saturday, the 'guys' had reason to feel proud of what they achieved.
The race 2 results can be found at: http://www.fiagt3.com with more information to come from James in due course.
